OSWEGO, NY – Oswego students had the opportunity to witness two outstanding performing groups recently as the benefits of the Arts in Education program continue to provide diverse and unique events.
“Ball in the House†an a capella group visited the Oswego Middle School and Charles E. Riley Elementary School while “Yarina†stopped at the Fitzhugh Park and Kingsford Park Elementary Schools.
The male singing group, “Ball in the House,†was an opportunity for students to witness the limitless possibilities of the human voice.
Arts in Education director Paul Brewster said, “It was wonderful to have such a high-caliber group to perform for our students. Their workshop at Riley was an inspirational moment for these young singers.â€ÂÂ
Continuing he noted the Riley experience was memorable.
Brewster explained, “Young students don’t get the chance to see choral opportunities outside of schools. ‘Ball in the House’ provided a demonstration of what is possible at a higher level. It was particularly good to see this done by a group of male singers.
Stereotypes and social pressures often keep boys away from choral ensembles.â€ÂÂ
“Yarina†is comprised of talented musicians from the indigenous people of Ecuador and an enthralled audience enjoyed the presentation of music and dance.
Brewster said, “Yarina’s performance gave students a unique look at the indigenous people of South America. The group consists of family members from Ecuador and they explained the relationship to the Latin culture that they share their country with.â€ÂÂ
He summed up the appearance by saying, “Their performance provided some musical opportunities that these students might never otherwise have experienced.â€ÂÂ
