Poll Worker Discharged on Election Day for Manipulative Comments

OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego County Today has been informed of an incident involving a poll worker at the Elk’s Club polling location on November 5th. According to a citizen approached, the poll worker expressed concerns about Proposition One, stating, “When you flip the ballot over, there’s an explanation that is very manipulative. It doesn’t explain everything.” This statement was corroborated by another individual who was present during the interaction.

In light of the situation, Oswego County Today reached out to the Oswego Board of Elections, where both Commissioners provided insights into the matter. They confirmed that upon learning of the incident at approximately 8:30 am, another poll worker instructed the dismissed worker, “This is not appropriate behavior.” The poll worker was immediately dismissed from their position by the commissioner by phone.

The poll worker in question had been serving for ten years and is trained annually, having undergone certification to perform their duties each election cycle.

Officials noted that a previous incident had been reported during the early voting period. That poll worker was not dismissed. One of the commissioners explained that during busy election years—like this year, which saw a turnout of 75%—poll workers are focused and engaged. However, in slower election years, they tend to have more time on their hands to complain, which sometimes leads to informal conversations.

The Board of Elections emphasizes the importance of maintaining impartiality and professionalism in polling locations to ensure a fair voting process for all citizens.
