EEEV Reported in West Monroe and Palermo

Continue Personal Protection Measures –

OSWEGO COUNTY – New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) informed the Oswego County Health Department that two mosquito samples have tested positive for the Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV). One sample was taken in the town of Palermo on Aug. 12, and the other sample was collected in the town of West Monroe on Aug. 14.

The West Monroe site was part of the target area that was sprayed on Aug. 7, while the Palermo site is a new location with positive results this year.

“These lab reports remind us that, although aerial spraying is effective in reducing some mosquito populations, it does not completely eradicate all mosquitoes or the diseases they carry,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Vera Dunsmoor. “While we continue to work with NYSDOH to monitor the situation, it is essential that people throughout the county continue to follow personal protection measures to prevent mosquito bites.

“As much as possible, we encourage everyone to limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active; to wear protective clothing such as long sleeves, pants, socks and shoes when outdoors; and to consider using insect repellents,” she added.

Be sure to read the product label and follow package instructions on all insect repellants. Those that contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus are most effective. Repellents that contain permethrin are meant for clothing and gear and should not be applied directly to the skin.

Oswego County Associate Public Health Sanitarian Chris Williams said that while this summer’s exceptionally hot, dry weather has helped reduce the mosquito population, there are still some simple steps people can take at home to help protect themselves from mosquito bites.

“The lack of rain in recent weeks has helped minimize some mosquito habitats,” he said. “However, mosquitoes are still active in the environment, so homeowners should stay on top of removing standing water around their property wherever possible. Unclog rain gutters, clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs; drain pool covers; and change the water in birdbaths and horse troughs twice a week. Most importantly, be sure to repair or replace broken window or door screens to help keep mosquitoes outside.”

Using mosquito dunk kits to reduce mosquito populations in certain situations can also help. Each kit contains a larvicide and must be used according to the directions provided. Mosquito dunk kits can be purchased for $5 from the Oswego County Soil and Water Conservation District, located at 3105 NYS Rte. 3, Fulton. Call 315-592-9663 for more information.
