OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego, New York. Oswego County Sheriff’s Office received New York State Re-Accreditation on September 12th, 2024 from the Division of Criminal Justice Services. As part of the Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Program, this milestone reflects an ongoing commitment to effectiveness, efficiency, and professionalism while building public trust.

Out of 532 police agencies in New York, only 165 are accredited, and maintaining this status is no small feat. Being part of the 31% of NYS law enforcement agencies who are accredited is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire OCSO team.

Re-accreditation shows that the Sheriff’s Office continues to meet or exceed standards in Administration, Training, and Operations. It means they have strong policies, a professional approach, and a team fully committed to our mission.

The NYS Law Enforcement Accreditation Program provides formal recognition that an agency meets or exceeds general expectations of quality in the field. In essence, accreditation acknowledges the implementation of policies that are conceptually sound and operationally effective. Agencies participating in the program conduct a thorough analysis of their organization to determine how existing operations can be adapted to meet established standards. When an agency adopts policies and procedures that meet the standards, a team of independent professionals conducts an on-site assessment to verify that all applicable standards have been successfully implemented.

Additionally, OCSO’s own Lieutenant Bill Bazzell is one of the NYS assessors who takes part in evaluating other agencies’ accreditation and assists them in their goal to meet professional standards. Lt. Bazzell’s involvement as an assessor demonstrates his commitment to promoting professionalism and public confidence in law enforcement.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to extend their appreciation to all staff and members who helped make re-accreditation possible.
