Sheriff’s Office Requests Public Comment On Police Reform, Reinvention Collaborative Plan

OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego County Sheriff Don Hilton and the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office want to hear from residents as they draft the State of New York Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative plan.

On June 12, 2020, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued Executive Order No. 203 requiring each local government in New York State to adopt a policing reform plan by April 1, 2021. The order authorizes the Director of the Division of the Budget to condition State aid to localities on the adoption of such a plan.

The State of New York Police Reinvention Collaborative asks local police agencies to actively engage with stakeholders in the local community and have locally approved plans for strategies, policies, and procedures of local police agencies.

The plan must include the appropriate role of the police but allow the police to do their jobs to protect the public. The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office has created a committee to help draft a plan that will be presented to both the public and the Oswego County Legislature.

The committee is comprised of community leaders from the County Legislature, Town and Village representatives, County Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, Faith based groups, Mental Health Department, Non-profit organizations, and the District Attorney’s Office.

They are asking for public comment so that they can learn from the community as they review the current relationship between residents and the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office.

The public comment period is open until December 21. 2020. The comments will assist the Sheriff’s Office and the committee with drafting their plan.
