Village of Pulaski Receives Grant for Great Lakes Basin Project

OSWEGO COUNTY – The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and New York Sea Grant (NYSG) announced that the Atlantic States Legal Foundation has received a nearly $40,000 grant for a community driven tree planting initiative in the village of Pulaski.

The award aims to engage Pulaski residents and partners in planting more than 70 trees in priority locations throughout the village to help reduce risks such as flooding and heat stress, enhance ecosystem services and support long-term environmental protection.

“The village of Pulaski is very grateful to the Atlantic States Legal Foundation in helping the village obtain a grant that will improve quality of life by strategically planting trees, and to New York State DEC and New York Sea Grant for providing the NY Great Lakes Basin Small Grants opportunity,” said Pulaski Mayor Jan Tighe. “The benefits of these additional trees in the village will help with stormwater mitigation and cooling residents during the hot summer days.”

The project is guided by the Richland-Pulaski Comprehensive Plan and Climate Action Plan and will include three community workshops to teach residents and partners about the social, ecological and economic benefits of trees. Attendees will also help identify strategic planting locations and develop site plans.

The $39,943 in funds were awarded for the project by New York’s Great Lakes Basin Small Grants Program that supports efforts to restore water quality, protect ecosystems and strengthen community resilience and stewardship.

New York Sea Grant, a cooperative program of Cornell University and the State University of New York, administers the grant in partnership with the NYSDEC’s Great Lakes Program. It is funded through the New York State Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) that aims to support critical environmental programs such as farmland protection, invasive species prevention and eradication, enhanced recreational access and more.
