OSWEGO COUNTY – Perhaps the Luck of the Irish came a few days early, but cross country ski racers were thrilled with the late season conditions that allowed for the Winona Forest Tourathon races to be held on beautiful, fresh snow on the morning of Saturday, March 11, 2023.

Several inches of new snow, coupled with below average temperatures created near perfect conditions for the running of the Nordic ski event that has been a North Country tradition for over forty years.

Competitors from several states and Canada made the trek to the fabled forest, gathering well before the 8:30 a.m. start to allow for ample time to wax and polish skis for the day’s layer of pristine Tug Hill white gold, and to test the combination of treatments applied to the skis bases on the snow, looking for the perfect combination of grip and glide.

As the countdown to the start commenced, skiers lined up with their skis gliding in perfect machine set tracks, made possible by the efforts of the WFRA’s veteran team of groomer operators, who often work through the night to provide snow lovers with amazing conditions.

Official timer Larry Wilkinson’s call of “go” started the adrenaline fueled athletes on a journey through the wilderness that makes the Winona Forest trails a destination for Winter sports lovers and for those seeking a little time away from civilization any time of year.

The resourceful volunteers of the WFRA pulled off another excellent season of winter sports in 2022-2023, despite some challenges from Mother Nature. A full slate of warm weather activities await those who can not get enough of healthful adventures in the incredibly scenic and easily accessed recreational wonderland that is Winona Forest. http://www.winonaforest.com/
