Dr. John B. Riley, 87, 09/12/2009

OSWEGO, NY – Dr. John B. Riley a lifelong resident of Oswego, passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at the age of 87.

He was the son of Charles E. Riley I and Anna (Burden) of Oswego.

He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Charles E. Riley; and his sister, Elizabeth (Riley) Deno.

Dr. Riley was a graduate of Oswego High School and received his undergraduate degree from Colgate University.

He earned his M.D. from the University of Rochester Medical School.

He served as a captain in a M.A.S.H. unit in the Korean War.

He then spent more than 30 years caring for the people of Oswego County as a surgeon at Oswego Hospital.

He served as chief of surgery for Oswego Hospital and was on the board of directors for both the Oswego Hospital and St. Luke’s Health Care.

Dr. Riley was an avid golfer, Life Master bridge player and enjoyed entertaining friends and family with his gift of music.

Dr. Riley is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Joyce (Branagh); his children, Kevin (Lynda) Riley of Syracuse, Meg Riley Davis of Canton, Tim (Tracy) Riley of Saratoga Springs, Trish (Joe) Muchynski of Stoney Creek, Canada, Michael (Elizabeth) Riley and Katie (Ken) Rinoldo both of Oswego.

He was the proud grandfather of 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Sept. 19, at St. Stephen’s Church.
