PHOENIX, NY – Virginia Day Hoag, 104, of Phoenix, NY died on Tuesday January 16, 2018, at St. Luke Health Services, Oswego, NY, with her family by her side.
Virginia was predeceased by her loving husband, Abel A. Hoag, who died on September 24, 1971; and a sister, Dorothy Day Anderson, who died on October 4, 1975.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Joe) Henderson of Phoenix; a son, Robert (Priscilla) Hoag of Owego, NY; two grandchildren, Elizabeth (Ken) McDonnell of San Diego, Calif. and Dr. Steve (Nadine) Hoag of Phoenix, NY; two great-grandchildren, Sarah and Alexandra Hoag; a nephew, Richard (Lynda) Anderson of Denton, Texas; a niece, Carole (Roger) Long of Woodstock, Ill.; and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Born in Buffalo, NY, on June 15, 1913, to her late parents, Maud Alexander and Arthur Baum Day, she grew up in Syracuse, graduating from Nottingham High School in 1930.
She graduated from Syracuse University in 1934 with a degree in Business Administration.
She and Abel were married August 8, 1936.
After living in Alabama and Florida during World War II, Virginia and Abel purchased the family farm land in Phoenix, NY, in 1950.
For the next 12 years, Virginia raised her children and volunteered as a Camp Fire Girl leader, a Cub Scout leader and in various activities of the United Methodist Church.
She worked part-time at Ellsworth’s Red and White grocery store.
In 1962, the family moved back to Syracuse.
Virginia began a 16-year career in the graduate school admissions department at Syracuse University.
After retiring from the university, she returned to Phoenix and became active in The Century Club of Phoenix Public Library and Topics Club.
She was a formidable bridge player.
She also loved watching Syracuse University football and basketball games and listening on the radio to the Syracuse Nationals games.
A memorial service will be held in June.
