Elizabeth J. ‘Betty’ Vona, 91

OSWEGO, NY – Elizabeth J. “Betty” Vona, 91, a longtime resident of Oswego passed away on Sunday February 17, 2013, at St.Luke Health Services.

Born in Rochester, she was the daughter of the late John and Ella Rose (O’Neil) Mahaney and was a graduate of Oswego High School, Class of 1939.

She was a Nurses Aide during World War II.

But her real job was being a loving mother,grandmother and great grandmother.

Betty was an active member of the Oswego community being a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, St.Paul’s Church, Oswego Country Club, her special “Lunch Brunch Club,” Meals on Wheels and Lord’s Delight Convenant Prayer Community.

Elizabeth was also a CCD teacher and a Girl Scout Leader and had participated in many retreats at Stella Maris in Skaneateles NY.

Betty loved to play golf and playing cards with her friends.

She played Bridge at St. Paul’s and was a original member of the St. Mary’s Bridge Group.

Surviving are her six daughters, Teresa Patterson of Florida, Denise (Joseph) Trionfero of Baldwinsville, Mary Louise McGiff of Liverpool, Loretta (Richard) Avery of Oswego, Suzanne (Keith) Wolling of Florida and Maureen (David) Parks of Sterling; 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by husband, J. Francis “Zeke” Vona, in 1984; and her brother, John “Red” Mahaney.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. from St. Paul’s Church.

Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Dowdle Funeral Home on Friday from 4-7 p.m.
