Michael E. ‘Chunky’ Ross

OSWEGO, NY – Michael E. “Chunky” Ross of Oswego passed away at home on Tuesday November 22, 2011.

Mike was born at Oswego Hospital on July 22, 1951, to Joseph P. and Luella (Doyle) Ross.

He attended St. John’s School, Oswego Catholic High School, Oswego
High School, and Canton A.T.C., where he was a member of the Alpha Theta Gamma Fraternity.

Mike was an inveterate storyteller and enjoyed nothing more than
reminiscing with friends about school days, the camaraderie at the corner of West Sixth and Bridge streets, and absolutely anything and everything about his beloved Oswego Fire Department.

Mike served on the Fire Department for 32 years and achieved his final promotion to the rank of Deputy Chief in May 2000.

For many years Mike served as Democratic Custodian of voting machines
for the Board of Elections.

He enjoyed meeting the many wonderful people involved in the election process, both at the polls and in the offices.

Mike was also employed on a part-time basis with Guido Vending and very much enjoyed his friendships with the Guido and Lee families.

Additionally, Mike bowled at the D.A. Lanes on the Schneider Bros. Jewelry Team.

He enjoyed fishing trips, attending NASCAR events with close friends, and camping with his family at Sandy Pond.

Mike is survived by his wife of 37 years, Connie (Harrold) Ross; and his daughters, Andrea Ross and Emily (Jason) Zelley.

Calling hours will be at Dowdle Funeral Home on Saturday from 2 -6 p.m.

The funeral service is private and at the convenience of the family.

  4. So sad to hear this, I can still picture him coming into my fathers restaurant, Freddie’s, and lighting the whole place up with smiles. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his entire family and friends.

  5. Mike was a fine officer & comrade with the Oswego Fire Dept.
    After serving with him for 20 years I came to know him as a Leader, a Comedian, and a good Friend.
    Mike you will always be missed!
