OSWEGO, NY – Richard James Boardway, 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday August 21, 2012, at St.Luke Health Related Facility in Oswego.
Born on January 10, 1925, Richard was the son of Julius and Ceila (Hoey) Boardway.
He resided at 3593 County Route 57 with his wife of 64 years, Viola (Guernsey) Boardway.
As a young man, Richard was an active Eagle Scout while attending local schools.
As so many young men of his time, he quit high school to serve his country during World War II and was inducted into the United States Navy on July 5, 1943.
Richard served in the Atlantic, Pacific,European and African campaigns as a member of the Armed Guard.
After his discharge from the Navy, Richard completed his studies at Oswego High School and went on to receive a Vocational Certificate in Automobile Mechanics 1 and 2 at the University of the State of New York Veterans Vocational School at Troy.
A dedicated and conscientious employee, Richard worked as a welder for Fitzgibbons Boiler Works, was co-owner of the Tydol Service Station in Oswego and as a maintenance man at Oswego Castings and Alcan Aluminum Corporation.
Away from work, Richard was a tinkerer, working on cars, boats and motors – three of the loves of his life.
He enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time in the great outdoors with his family and friends.
Richard was a communicant of St. Peter’s Church in Oswego.
Richard is survived by his wife, Viola; and four children, Carol (Michael) Fitzsimmons of Oswego, Richard David (Sandra) Boardway of Mineral Va., Alan (Kathleen Jordan) Boardway of Penfield NY and Anne (Mark) Backer of Oswego.
Richard is also survived by his six grandchildren, Rebecca and Matthew Fitzsimmons, Megan Boardway, Rene’ and Kyle Backer and Kaden Boardway.
He was predeceased by his son, Frederick Boardway; and grandson, Adam Boardway.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. from St. Peter’s Church, 83 E. Albany St., Oswego.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Friends and family may call at the Dowdle Funeral Home, 154 E. Fourth St., Oswego, on Friday from 6-9 p.m.

The family acknowledges the exceptional care that Richard received at the Syracuse VA Hospital and at the St. Luke Health Related Facility, especially the third floor staff.
