OSWEGO, NY – Rita M. (Hibbert) King, a former resident of East Eighth Street, passed away at St. Luke’s Health Facility on Tuesday Oct. 12, 2010.
Mrs. King was born in Oswego on Nov. 14, 1918, the daughter of John B. and Eva (Peashey) Hibbert.
She was the widow of the late Sgt. Frank E. King, who died in 1964.
Mrs. King is survived by her daughter, Barbara Hanley of Oswego; and four sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Carol King of Montpelier, Vt., James and Nancy of Mattydale, Michael and Juli of Colorado Springs, Colo. and David and Linda of Oswego.
She is also survived by nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Hibbert of Oswego.
She was predeceased by five brothers, Alfred, Robert, Frederick, Leo and John Hibbert; five sisters, Rose Baker, Florence Syrell, Catherine Hibbert, Gladys Sivalia and Theresa Harrison; her son-in-law, Daniel E. Hanley; her grandson, Craig S. Hanley; and her great-grandson, Owen A. King.
Rita married Sgt. King on Aug. 31, 1941, in St. Louis Church, Oswego, and embarked on her life as a military wife.
Sgt. And Mrs. King settled in Patchogue, Long Island, where Sgt. King was stationed at Camp Upton until World War II.
Mrs. King returned to Oswego while Sgt. King served in the war.
After World War II, the family moved to Bristol, Pa., where Sgt, King was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ, and shortly thereafter was transferred to Korea.
In 1950, Mrs. King packed up two preschoolers, and sailed across the ocean to Austria, where they were stationed at Linz during the American occupation of that country.
In 1953, they were again transferred to the US, where they were stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. In 1954, they were transferred to Fort Knox, Ky., where they remained until Sgt. King’s retirement in 1960 when they returned to Oswego.
Mrs. King was a graduate of St. Louis School and Oswego High School.
She was a faithful member of St. Louis Parish in her early years and a faith member of St. Paul’s Parish since 1960.
She was a former member of the St. Paul’s Altar Rosary Society.
Throughout her life, Mrs. King was actively involved in many organizations. But, in her later years, she was a devotee of the Divine Mercy. She tirelessly promoted this devotion until her illness in 2000.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Church.
Friends and relatives may call at the Dowdle Funeral Home, 154 E. Fourth St., Oswego, on Friday from 4 – 7 p.m.
Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
