Donald W. Kitts, 85, of Fulton, died Saturday at Seneca Hill Manor after a long illness.

A native of Fulton, he had resided in Fulton most of his life. He lived in Cleburne, TX from 1992-2001.

Don was a self employed carpenter and cabinetmaker in Fulton for 30 years. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Volney. Don had served as town of Volney Supervisor for two terms, 1987-1990 and served as a town of Volney Councilman for 16 years.

He was an army veteran of World War II, serving in Italy, France, and Germany and was awarded two Bronze Star Medals and Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart Medal. Don was a member of V.F.W. Post 569, Fulton, its military honor guard and was named Fulton’s 2009 Veteran of the Year and grand marshall in the Fulton Memorial Day Parade.

He was a life member and past commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Cleburne, TX. He was a former Boy Scout master of Rotary Troop in Fulton. Don was a past master of Hiram Lodge 144, F.&A.M., Fulton and past Grand Representative of Masons of the State of New York to Prince Edward Island, Canada; past high priest of Fulton Chapter 167, R.A.M.; past commander of Lake Ontario Commandery 32, K.T., Fulton and was Grand Representative of the Grand Commandery of New York State to the State of Arkansas. He was a member of Crusade Priory, York Rite Cross of Honour and Media Shriners in Watertown.

Surviving are: his wife, of 63 years, Claudine Taft Kitts of Fulton; a daughter, Deborah Matthews of Cleburne, TX; a son, Allan (Frances) Kitts of Monaca, PA; one sister, Pauline (William) Rebeor of Port St. Lucy, FL; a brother, Paul Kitts of Fulton; five grandchildren, Aaron (Michelle) Kitts, Valerie (Matt) Dininni, Christina Kitts, Jay and Jennifer Matthews; three great-grandchildren, Gaberielle and Hannah Dininni and Carter Kitts.

Services will be held 12 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Volney with burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Volney. Masonic and Military Services will be conducted. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 2996 County Route 45, Fulton, NY 13069.
