Howard D. Slade, 83

FULTON, NY – Howard D. Slade, 83, of Fulton, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, May 3, 2018, following a long illness, with his family by his side.

Born in Warners, NY, on October 13, 1934, he was the son of the late Anna and Homer Slade.

Howard was a graduate of Warners High School.

He volunteered for the draft in 1952 and entered service with the U.S. Army in 1954, and was stationed in Germany.

After his service in 1956, he attended the Environmental Science of Forestry at Syracuse University.

Howard had been employed by the Onondaga County Engineering Department as a land surveyor before entering the New York State Police in 1962, he served in uniform, as an investigator and senior investigator with the B.C.I. in both troops A and D.

Howard was also assigned as security for the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics.

After his retirement from the NYS Police, he worked as a security manager for Rite Aid Corporation and as a river marshal for Douglaston Manor at the Salmon River in Pulaski.

Howard was a member and past president of the Fulton Lions Club and an avid S.U. fan, fisherman, golfer, reader and history buff.

He had many memorable stories and sayings that were often quoted with his unique sense of humor.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Phyllis; son, Michael (Andrea) Slade; daughter, Deborah (Mark) Brotherton; grandson, Jacob Brotherton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Helen Hughes of Bolton, Conn.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 7, at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay St., Fulton, with services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the funeral home.

Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fulton.

A sincere thank you and appreciation go to the 1-4 staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their excellent care and compassion, to his personal home health aides and Central NY Hospice.

  1. I’m so proud to have known Howard and served in the Lions Club with him. He was a kind and decent man who will be deeply missed by his friends and family. My condolences to Phyllis, Mike and Debbie.

  2. Worked with Howard on different cases when he was with the Fulton State Police Barracks. He was a true gentleman. he and his wife were great people. Phyllis my heart is heavy with sorrow. Condolences to the whole family. RIP Howard.

As you know Howard was my best friend and we shared many years of friendship and laughter together on the golf course, fishing, Lions Club and countless hours at Dunkin Donuts solving the problems of the world. I could talk about you for a long time and not run out of topics for discussion.
    I will miss you dearly my friend, Rest In Peace .

  9. Mrs Slade and family. I was a friend from Dunkin Donuts. We have moved to Texas so we won’t be able to attend the services;but our hearts will be there with your family and our Dunkin Donut friends. We all had so much fun together.
