Irmgard (Paetz) Manton, of Sarasota, FL, died at her summer home in Fair Haven, NY on Monday, August 29, 2011 after a two year battle against the complications of Ovarian Cancer. Hospice care was directed by Hospice of the Finger Lakes with the family and Sonya Pawliw, Irm’s best friend from nursing school days, assisting.
Irmgard was born in Harzgerode, East Germany on January 16, 1945, the only daughter of Margreth (Bahnweg) and Karl Paetz and later stepdaughter of Alexander Lasot, all are deceased.
Irmgard and her mother escaped from East Germany in 1948 to reside in New York City, where she graduated from Walton High School in 1962 and Bellevue School of Nursing in 1965, subsequently becoming a Registered Nurse. She worked at Bellevue Hospital from 1965 until her marriage on July 29, 1967; then worked at a nursing home in Alliance, OH and at Tompkins County Hospital in Ithaca, NY, while getting her PHT degree (putting hubby through). After raising her family in Camillus, NY and then the Radisson community in Baldwinsville, NY, she returned to nursing and worked in Syracuse, NY at Loretto, The Nottingham and finished her nursing career as Care Coordinator for the Kirkpatrick Day Program at the Central New York Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, retiring in 2005.
During her years in Radisson, she was active in the Girl Scouts performing various functions including Service Manager and as a Director on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scout Council of Central New York, Inc. Since 2005, Irm and her husband have enjoyed being with family and friends, while residing in Sarasota, FL and spending the summer months in Fair Haven, NY, including sailing the waters of Lake Ontario and environs.
Irm is survived by her husband of 44 years, George W. Manton; her daughter, Stacey Ann and son-in-law John Surguy of Marlboro, NJ; son Peter John Manton of Liverpool, NY; son, Bruce Arthur and daughter-in-law Laura (Finn) Manton of Clay, NY and grandchildren, Margaret Ann Surguy and Austin John Surguy of Marlboro, NJ.
There will be no calling hours or services. Celebration of Life contributions can be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and/or any of the institutions mentioned above.
