FULTON, NY – Katharine M. Tierney, 98, of Fulton, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at Oswego Hospital.

Born in Oswego to the late Karl and Gertrude Miller, she lived in Fulton most of her life spending the last year at St. Luke Health Services in Oswego.

Mrs. Tierney was a graduate of the Oswego Normal School and later earned her B.S. in Education from SUNY Oswego.

She was a career teacher, having taught more than 25 years, mostly at Lanigan Elementary School.

She had been very active in her community and at Holy Family Church where she was on the Parish Council and among the first women to serve as a lector and as an Eucharistic minister.

Mrs. Tierney was a member of the Fulton Retired Teachers Association, Friends of the Fulton Public Library, Fulton Friends of History, the Women’s Club of Fulton, the A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, as well as having been president of the Catholic School Board.

She had been an avid reader and bridge player, and had traveled extensively in the states as well as abroad.

Mrs. Tierney was predeceased by her husband, William Tierney; and sisters, Margaret Heagerty and Dorothy Gleason, both of Oswego.

She leaves behind two children, Ellen Kane of Fulton and her fiancée, Bart DiMento and James (Susie) Tierney of Newmarket, New Hampshire; five grandchildren, Daniel (Patricia) Rebeor of Florida, Gregory Tierney of New Hampshire, Carolyn (David) Coant of Volney, Matthew Tierney of New York City and Julie (Michael) Diamond, of Massachusetts; as well as eight great-grandchildren, Cassandra Rebeor, Charles, Hyland III, Ella, Fiona, Harper and Cameron Tierney, and Jamie and Tristan Diamond; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 1, at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay St. Fulton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Joseph Scardella at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, at Holy Trinity Parish, corner of Rochester and South Third streets in Fulton.

  1. I’m so sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. She was a wonderful and caring person. I loved playing bridge with her she was a whiz at it. God bless your family.
