Lewis A. George, 85

HANNIBAL, NY – Lewis A. George, 85, of Hannibal died Wednesday January 16, 2013, at the Syracuse Veteran Affairs Medical Center.

Born in Clayton, he was a 48-year resident of Hannibal.

Lewis retired as an insurance agent from R.J. MacDougall Insurance Agency in Fulton.

He had previously owned his own insurance agency, was a former district manager for Nationwide Insurance Company and owned his own heating and plumbing business and was a member of the Steamfitters’ Pipefitters’ Local 73.

Lewis was a member of the Hannibal United Methodist Church for more than 50 years where he had held several offices.

He was very active in the Hannibal community, serving on the school board for five years and he was a past president of the Parent Teachers Association.

Lewis was a past president of the Hannibal Chamber of Commerce, where he was the chairman of the committee that was instrumental in bringing the First National Bank of Waterloo to Hannibal.

He was a former member of the Hannibal Volunteer Fire Department, the LaFargeville
American Legion, Klock Smith Post 1788 and was a Boy Scout leader.

Lewis was a member of Hannibal Masonic Lodge #550 where he was a past grand master
in 1970 and district grand lecturer of the Oswego District Order of the Eastern Star.

He was also a patron of the Hannibal Order of Eastern Star where served as the past district grand lecturer in 1978.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Lewis served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during World War II.

He enjoyed playing and coaching sports, bowling, golfing, hunting, fishing and camping
with his family.

He enjoyed camping with the N.C.T camping group.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Sterling, Oletha and Dorothy.

Surviving: his wife of 67 years, the former, Elizabeth M. House; children, Brenda Hopkins, Rick George, Debbie MacDougall and Kelly Kingsley; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.

Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Foster Funeral Home, 837 Cayuga St., Hannibal.

Memorial services with Masonic and Military Honors will be 5:30 Saturday at Hannibal United Methodist Church, corner of West and Church streets, Hannibal.

Burial will be at the family’s convenience at Grove Cemetery in LaFargeville.
