Anthony Ponzi

OSWEGO, NY – Anthony ButchPonzi, 83, of the Town of Oswego, passed away Friday, May 26, 2023, at the Oswego Hospital. He was born in Oswego to Angelo and Amelia (Bellardino) Ponzi in 1940; the eighth of their eleven children. 

Butch is survived by his sister, Delores Fitzgerald, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five sisters Clara DeStephen Rupert, Louise DelNero, Rita Johnson, Barbara Ponzi, and Mary Flett, and four brothers Leonard, Floyd Weno, Francis Lala”, and Joseph.

Butch was the Recreation Director for the City of Oswego, retiring in 1995.

He spent his retirement volunteering for several youth sports organizations, including Oswego Youth Soccer. He spent countless hours helping to build the Richard Benjamin Soccer Fields. His volunteerism was recognized by the Oswego Childrens Board when then awarded him with their Unsung Hero Award” in 2003.

Butch was a sports enthusiast and was a lifelong fan of the NY Yankees and the Detroit Lions. He enjoyed watching Oswego High School and SUNY Oswego baseball and softball games. For many years, Butch played softball with Mr. Ms softball team. In his younger years he coached youth basketball and baseball.  Butch was elected to the Softball Hall of Fame in 1989.

Calling hours will be held from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, with a service to follow with Father Morisette at Nelson Funeral Home, 11 West Albany St. Oswego.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Oswego Hospital for the wonderful care Butch received.
