James E. Germain

OSWEGO – James E. Germain, 90, of Oswego passed away on July 7th, 2025, with his family by his side.

Born in Oswego, he was the son of the late Edward Germain and Margaret Germain Regan.

He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Ruth E. Germain in 2023.

James was educated in Oswego schools before joining the United States Army.

He was a proud military veteran who served his country during the Korean conflict.  He was a corporal in the 38th Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was the recipient of several military honors, including the Army Good Conduct Medal, the UN Korean Service Medal, the Republic of Korea Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge.  After returning home, he married Ruth on February 5, 1955, and they moved to Trenton, NJ where James was stationed at Fort Dix and served as a drill instructor.

Once his military service was complete, James and his bride returned to Oswego to raise their eventual four children.

James retired from the Hammermill Paper Company after many years of service, and he and Ruth enjoyed over 25 years of retirement living in which they traveled and enjoyed their home, family, and hobbies.

James was a hardworking man who took excellent care of his mother, wife, children, and grandchildren.  James spent much of his teenage years working multiple jobs to support his mother and siblings.  Until he was married, he sent all his Army pay to his mother in Oswego.  Once he had a family of his own, he tirelessly worked to provide food, shelter, and many luxuries.

James was an avid Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees fan.  He collected Oswego memorabilia, particularly Oswego postcards along with his best friend Artie McManus.  He acquired many rare gems” as he would call them.  James was an accomplished bowler for many years and won several bowling awards.  He loved to care for his yard and was known for spending hours dedicated to his manicured lawn and pristine home.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his siblings Carol Solazzo, Virginia Solazzo, Jane Scaccia, and John Jack” Germain.  He is also predeceased by his grandson Ronald Bonz” Patterson and his beloved Shih Tsu, Buddy.

He is survived by his children Michael (Elizabeth) Germain of Oswego, Timothy (Abigail) Germain of Florida, Julia (Daniel) Demm of Oswego, and Linda Jeanne Germain of Oswego.  He is also survived by grandchildren Kristina DeStevens, Tracie Germain, Michael Germain, Jr., Nicole Patterson, Jeffrey Germain, Madeline Germain, and seven great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his Shih Tsu, Rosie.

James was a devout Catholic who never missed Mass until his later years when illness prevented him from attending in person.

Jamess family would like to thank his personal caregivers who provided him with loving care in his final years.

Burial will be held privately at St. Peter Cemetery with Military Honors.

Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
