Mrs. Alma Mae (Mitchell) Castaldo, prominent, lifetime resident of Oswego, NY, died peacefully surrounded by her family in her hometown on Friday April 8, 2016.

Mrs. Castaldo was predeceased by several family members.

She was the daughter of Alfred and Elsie Mitchell and the adoring sister of Wanda (William) Gorman, William (Patricia), Joseph (Jean) and Harold Mitchell.

Mrs. Castaldo leaves behind a loving family, husband, Joseph D. Castaldo; daughters, Cindy Murabito, Sandra Bilson and Patricia Reynolds; six grandchildren, Joseph Murabito (Ana Maria), Michael Murabito, Gregory Bilson, Jessica Bilson, Katherine Toomey (Jonathan) and Nicole Reynolds (Daniel Jones); four beautiful great-grandchildren, Isabella and Joseph Murabito and George and Patrick Toomey; and sister-in-law, Beverly Mitchell.

She loved all animals including her children’s dogs and watching birds at her birdfeeder.

For more than 30 years, Mrs. Castaldo worked tirelessly alongside her husband, Joe, to build the successful J.D. Castaldo Construction Company Inc.

Her influence as vice president and secretary left an undeniable mark.

Prior to working with her husband, she was employed as an operator for New York Telephone Inc.

An avid traveler, Mrs. Castaldo enjoyed soaking up the sun in warm, exotic locations including parts of South America, The US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Nevada and California.

She also delighted in experiencing Italy with her husband and friends.

A child of modest means, Alma dedicated much of her life volunteering and giving to those in need.

For more than 10 years, Mrs. Castaldo sat on the board of directors for the Salvation Army and American Red Cross of Oswego County.

A lover of children, she passionately supported the work of St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

A sports aficionado, Mrs. Castaldo spent endless hours cheering for her favorite teams including the Buffalo Bills, New York Knicks, New York Yankees, Syracuse Orange, Oswego Buccaneers and the Brentwood School Eagles.

She and her husband never missed their grandchildren’s academic or sporting events.

She will continue to cheer for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren from a VIP seat in heaven.

A lover of people, Alma proudly became a second mother and “Noni” to the children in her life.

A social butterfly at heart, she enjoyed lunching with her close friends and was elected chairman of “The Syracuse Area Friday Night Supper Club.”

Happiest with a full house, Mrs. Castaldo will be forever known for her overwhelming hospitality, generosity, warm smile, incredible sense of humor and infectious laugh.

Her memory will be forever celebrated and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Mrs. Castaldo’s life will be celebrated 3-7 p.m. at Nelson’s Funeral Home in Oswego on April 12.

A funeral will take place on April 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Oswego.
