OSWEGO, NY – Barbara J. Handley-Place, 80, of Oswego, died Saturday March 26, 2016, peacefully surrounded by her family at Oswego Hospital.

Born in Fulton, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Lucille (Orr) Huckabee.

Barbara was an integral part of the Oswego community but most of all, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She worked for Riley Elementary as a third grade teacher for more than 20 years.

She also served at Oswego Hospital Auxiliary for 15 years and as its president for seven years.

She was an active member of the Oswego Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Elks Auxiliary.

Barbara’s loving smile and warm greeting will be missed by all.

Barbara is survived by her husband, David Place; daughter, Karen (Richard) Gell of Baldwinsville; her two sons, Charles (Cheri) and Thomas (Donna) Handley of Oswego; her two brothers, Charles Huckabee of Central Square and James (Diane) Huckabee of Oswego; eight grandchildren, Brian (Elizabeth), Zachary and Senna Handley, Erika (Michael) Garnto, Emily, Kristen, Chelsea, and Ryan Gell; two great-grandchildren, Amelia and Samantha Handley; David’s children Raymond (Kathy) Place, David (Rosemary) Place and Beth Stone-Place; and his five grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, William B. Handley former owner of Burkes Home Center in Oswego and Fulton.

Calling hours will be held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson Funeral Home.

Services will be at 9 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church Thursday, March 31.

Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery.

  1. I remember Mrs Handly-Place from Riley School. Dad and she were friends. And Dave I remember you from????? softball???? She was a sweet kind happy lady that for love . I am sorry she has passed. RIP spread your wings and fly!

  3. To all the Handley’s and Place’s, I’m so very sorry to hear of your loss. Mrs. Handley was my teacher at Riley many years ago. I remember her very fondly. Prayers for all of you but know she is at peace with the good in heaven.

  4. My daughter had Mrs. Handley as her 3rd grade teacher at Riley. My husband and I always considered her a class act and a super teacher. We have commented many times that we need more teachers “like Mrs. Handley.” She always greeted me with a warm smile and hello, even though my daughter was her student many years ago. Our condolences to her family.

  5. Wonderful woman, great teacher, a real loss to our community. I worked at Riley when Barb was teaching, she was greatly respected. I will miss seeing her occasionally at Wendy’s . My condolences to her family, I’m sure she will be greatly missed. So sorry to hear this.
