OSWEGO, NY – Edward C. Hoefer, 79, of Oswego, passed away Sunday morning, July 18, 2010, at Oswego Hospital.
Born at his family home in Oswego where he resided all his life, Ed was the son of the late Walter G. and Mary (Day) Hoefer.
He graduated from Oswego High School in 1949.
Ed was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, where he served in Japan as a radio operator.
He was a proud American, and always flew a flag in his yard.
He was the self-employed owner and operator of Ed Hoefer & Son Construction and a member of Carpenters’ Local 747.
Throughout his career Ed left his mark on many homes, businesses and buildings throughout the Oswego area, always completing each job to perfection.
He worked alongside his son, nephews, and friends, and was always looking to pass along his knowledge and skills.
Ed enjoyed bowling in his younger years and later found great joy in watching bowling all over New York.
He took great pride in his children’s many bowling accomplishments, especially the opening of Lighthouse Lanes.
Ed was a constant fixture at the bowling center, always greeting customers from his stool at the snack bar.
He was an active member in the bowling community and received the Oswego Bowling Association Julian A. Morgia Award of Gratitude in 2002 for his support through sponsorship.
He also enjoyed maintaining his yard and vehicles, decorating his home for holidays, and watching sports.
Ed’s greatest accomplishment and pride was his family, in whom he instilled strong values of hard work, independence and unconditional love.
His smile was infectious and his sense of humor was plentiful, as he always had a joke to offer.
Generous and outgoing, he would always go above and beyond to help anyone in need.
Ed’s love for life was strong and he left a lasting impression on each life he entered.
Ed is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Carol A. (Smith) Hoefer; a son, Robert (Suzanne) Hoefer; two daughters, Kathryn (Tom Miano) and Tammy (Mike Byrne) Hoefer; three granddaughters, Mary (Justin Koskowski), Katie and Kristen Hoefer; future step-grandsons, Cameron and Noah Byrne; three brothers, Francis (Helen), William (Ann) and Thomas (Katherine) Hoefer; a sister-in-law, Barbara (Frank) Basile, of Cato; 12 nephews; nine nieces and their children and grandchildren; and a lifetime of loyal friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a niece, Joy Basile.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary’s Church.
Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 E. Second St., Oswego.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St. Mary’s Church Building Fund.
