OSWEGO, NY – Floyd Kunzwiler, 85, of Oswego, passed away Thursday Feb. 18, 2016, at Morningstar Residential Care Center.
He was born in Oswego to Wray and Margaret (Toporowski) Kunzwiler.
After graduating from Oswego High School, he joined the U.S. Army, and was an airborne paratrooper, and a tank commander.
He attended OCS where he earned his commission in 1952 as a 2nd Lieutenant.
He volunteered for service in Korea, and served as a platoon commander during combat operations. He earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant prior to his honorable discharge in 1953.
In 1953, Mr. Kunzwiler joined the City of Oswego Police Department as a patrolman.
He quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed Chief of Police in 1976.
He served as chief until his retirement in 1986.
He also was a member of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1570, once serving as its president.
He was a life member of the Oswego Elks Lodge and a former longtime member of the Oswego Country Club.
He also was a past board member of the Oswego Minor Hockey Association.
He was predeceased by his wife, Joan P. (Kelly) Kunzwiler, who passed away in 2000; and two brothers, Robert Kunzwiler and John Kunzwiler.
He is survived by his children, Karen (James) Berney of Venice Beach Fla., Michelle (Mari O’Neill) Kunzwiler of Seattle Wash., and Paul (Sandy) Kunzwiler of Oswego; a brother, Donald (Carolyn) Kunzwiler of Fulton; six grandchildren, Nicole (Eric) Broom, Ryan Berney, Eric Berney, Michael Pappa, Thomas Pappa and Alec Kunzwiler; three great-grandchildren, Addison, Kelly Joan and Erin; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 25, in St. Paul’s Church, Oswego.
Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 E. Second St., Oswego.
Special thanks goes out to the staff of Saint Francis Commons for the care and love they provided for our father over the past year, and a most special and sincere thank you goes out to Morningstar Residential Care Center, who not only nursed him back to health one year ago, but also allowed him to die in peace and with dignity in the city he loved and protected his entire career.
