OSWEGO, NY – Gerald (Jerry) E. Martin, born June 23, 1929, passed away on Friday July 26, 2013, at Oswego Hospital after a short illness.
Jerry has left his wife of 68 years, Margaret E. (Jackson) Martin; a daughter, Kathleen Russo (husband William); two grandsons, Martin E. Russo (wife Cindy) and Richard A. Russo (wife Amy); one great-granddaughter, Lauren A. Russo; several nieces and nephews; plus two sisters-in-law, Betty and Eleanor Martin.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Kathryn (Morley) Martin; brothers, Theodore, William, Raymond and Warren; a sister, Loretta; and several nephews and nieces.
Jerry, although very young, enlisted in the Marines towards the end of World War II, he fought in Korea and in Vietnam.
He was a decorated war hero. But, he always felt his greatest achievement was to be honor as one of the 62 men who received a Battlefield Commission for saving the life of many during Vietnam, allowing Jerry to retire from the United States Marine Corps as a captain after 24 years of service.
Jerry and Margaret moved back to their home town of Oswego in 1973, were he then went to work and retired 10 years later from Stone & Webster/ Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station.
They relocated for a while in Homosassa, Florida, to enjoy great weather and friends, but came back home to settle for good in 2007, where they now reside.
Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday at the Nelson Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held 10 a.m. to noon, prior to the service, at the funeral home, 11 W. Albany St., Oswego.

Joanne & I are very sorry to hear of Jerry passing. I was glad to have the chance to visit him when he was at Seneca. He was one of a kind and I will always be greatful for the times & memories I had when we were neighbors. It was great men like Jerry Martin who went to battle for us to enjoy the freedom that we have today. He will be missed dearly. Our thoughts & prayers are with you all. R.I.P. my friend.
