Joseph N. Elen Sr., 101

OSWEGO – Joseph N. Elen Sr., passed away at 101 years old on Monday March 2, 2015, at his home in Scriba.

Joe was born in the town of Oswego, the eldest son of the late John and Pauline   (Rzechowicz) Elen.

Joe worked for many years as a contractor.

He completed numerous remodeling projects for local residents including room upgrades, garages and chimneys.

He also constructed his home where he lived with his wife and family.

After retirement, he created various woodworking projects sharing his expertise with family, friends and neighbors.

Joe was a charter member of the Scriba Historical Society and a founding member of the Continental Arms Collectors Association, where he also served terms as vice president and treasurer.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lyla (Newstead) Elen; a son, Joseph Jr. of Colorado; a daughter, Constance; his grandsons, Joseph (Krista) Elen III, Matthew (Katie) Elen and Stephen Elen; his great-grandsons, Connor and Ollie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Frank, Edward and John Leo; and his sisters, Sophie and Elsie.

A calling hour will be held from 11 a.m. until noon Saturday at the Church of the Resurrection, 120 W. Fifth St.

Funeral services will follow at noon in the chapel.

Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to the Scriba Historical Society or to the Continental Arms Collectors Association.
