M. Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Scanlon, 95

OSWEGO, NY – M. Elizabeth “Betty” Scanlon, 95, of Oswego passed away Saturday morning May 24, 2014, in Oswego Hospital.

She was born in Oswego and was the daughter of the late John and Mary Mullen Scanlon.

Betty was a graduate of the Crouse Irving School of Nursing where she received her Registered Nurse certification.

She was also a graduate of SUNY Oswego.

She worked as a school nurse for several years and then later returned to SUNY Oswego and received her certification to become a school guidance counselor.

She continued her career as a guidance counselor in the Oswego City School District until her retirement.

She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and the American Contract Bridge Association.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and a former communicant of St. John’s Church.

Betty is survived by two sisters, Geraldine Jones of Oswego and Patricia (William) O’Toole of North Syracuse; several cousins, and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Eleanor Notarpole, Martha Devine and Margaret Kuno.

The entire family is grateful for the longtime support and care received from Betty’s neighbor and friend, Robin Evanchik.

Betty was a wonderful aunt to all of her sisters’ children and grandchildren throughout her lifetime and was also a guiding light to many decades of Oswego children who she helped and guided while working in the Oswego school district.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home and at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church.

Calling hours will be held from 9 – 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
