Mary L. Vona, 89, of Oswego, passed away Thursday, November 4th, 2010, at her home.
She was born in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of Domenic & Angeline (Vergari) Pileri. She was raised in Detroit, Michigan, where she met her beloved husband Thomas R. Vona of Oswego. They married on June 7th, 1941.
Tom brought Mary back to Oswego with him in 1946, where they opened Vona’s Restaurant on Utica & W. 10th Streets. Mary brought her mother’s recipes into the kitchen, and started a menu that continues to live on today, through her loving family.
Mary was predeceased by her loving husband Thomas R. Vona, in 1988. Together they lived in Oswego, NY and Vero Beach, Fla., and also traveled the world. She enjoyed golf, and was an active member of The Oswego Country Club. Mary lived her life to the fullest. She brought love, joy, and laughter to her family, and all who knew her. Her strength, passion, & beauty will be missed by her family and friends.
Surviving are her daughter Josephine A. (Murphy) Occhino, her son Thomas R. (Mary Jane) Vona, her six grandchildren, Murphy (Debra) Occhino, Lesa (James) Peterson, Brandi (John) Weidman , Julie Occhino, Elisabeth (David) Haight, Jessica (Michael) Fortier, and her ten great grandchildren, Austen and Cassandra Peterson, Sarah and Carlie Stoebner, Abigail, John, and Grace Weidman, Ava and Lyla Occhino, Samantha Haight.
Predeceased is her husband Thomas R. Vona (Sept., 27th, 1988), and her son, August J. Vona (Sept., 22nd, 2010),
Celebration Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church in Oswego, on Tuesday, November, 9th, 2010 at 12:00 Noon.
There will be no calling hours. Entombment will be in All-Saint’s Mausoleum, St. Peter’s Cemetery.
