ANTWERP – Milton E. Marsh, 94, of Main Street, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, NY.
Born on April 19, 1921, in Syracuse, NY, he was a son of Edward and Iva Campbell Marsh.
He resided in Sterling and was a graduate of Hannibal High School.
Mr. Marsh received his bachelor’s degree from Oswego State University College and went to work as an industrial arts teacher at Antwerp High School, which later became Indian River Central School, Philadelphia.
He earned his master’s degree from St. Lawrence University, Canton.
In 1974, Mr. Marsh went to work for the US Customs Service in Alexandria Bay, as a customs inspector, retiring in 1984.
He married Marian E. Hall on June 20, 1942, at Niagara Falls with Rev. Melvin Hill, officiating.
She passed away October 12, 1994.
Then he married Phyllis K. Whitmore on August 24, 1996 at the First Congregational Church of Antwerp with Rev. Kenneth Leamon, officiating.
Milton was a 63-year member of the Antwerp Masonic Lodge # 0226 and was a Patron for the Order of the Eastern Star – Antwerp / Black River Chapter. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Antwerp and was a lifetime trustee.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, flowers and spending winters in Myrtle Beach.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Daryl and Gail Marsh, Theresa, NY, Hal Marsh, Colorado, and Brian Marsh and his companion, Pam Easton, Fowler, NY; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Marsh, Geneva, NY; two step-sons, Sterling Swartout and his companion, Janay Page, Fresno, Calif., and James and Mindy Whitmore, Antwerp, NY; two step-daughters, Lonetta Swartout, Cooperstown, NY and Karen Thomas, Theresa, NY; a sister, Betty Brown, of Florida; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
His first wife, Marian; a son, Jerard “Jerry” Marsh; a sister, Virginia Adamy; and a step-daughter, Jane Thornton all died before him.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, at the First Congregational Church of Antwerp with Rev. Genevieve M. Dox, officiating.
Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Hannibal Village Cemetery, Hannibal.
Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, September 28, at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Inc., Theresa, NY.
A Masonic service is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
