OSWEGO, NY – Dan Barach was born February 8, 1931, in Weirton, WVa., and died Sunday May 10, 2015, at his home in Oswego.
He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Hermina Barach; sisters Mary and Anne (Ed) Malinowski; and beloved cousin, Zonko.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Oswego; daughter, Ann Fine and granddaughter, Madison, grandson Wyatt, all of St. Petersburg, Fla.; daughter, Carol (Paul) Gustafson, of Sugar Hill, Ga., niece, Nancy (David) Turkaly and nephew, Paul (Donna) Malinowski all of Weirton, WVa.
Dan was raised in the steel mill town of Weirton and began his music studies and love of opera in junior high school.
He continued through Michigan State (BA) and the University of Illinois (MA).
While playing viola in the Houston Symphony he was drafted into the United States Army and served with the 7th Army Symphony.
Upon returning to the States he joined the viola section of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra.
In 1964, he decided to change careers and location and began teaching in the music department at the State University College at Oswego.
There he enjoyed working with his colleagues, playing his viola, being a member of the Sheldon String Trio, and sharing his knowledge and love of music with the students so much that he didn’t retire until May of 2014.
He also had extensive interest and knowledge of nutrition, vitamins and supplements.
He was a great believer in exercise and became a certified instructor of Alexander Technique (a mind-body method) and was proficient in Chi-lel (a healing exercise).
He also walked every day.
After an unexpected diagnosis of Mantle cell lymphoma he entered Hospice in February of 2015 and died on a sunny Sunday afternoon, May 10, 2015.
There will be no calling hours.
A private family memorial service will be held later.
