James ‘Jim’ ‘The Shadow’ ‘Tick’ Utick

FULTON, NY – James “Jim” “The Shadow” “Tick” Utick, 82, of Fulton, passed away peacefully Saturday June 28, 2014, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse.

He was born in Oswego, NY, to the late Frank and Scholastica Utick.

He has been a lifetime resident of Fulton.

Mr. Utick was a 1949 graduate of Fulton High School.

Jim was often referred to as “The Greatest Athlete to come out of Fulton.”

His accomplishments in high school included being named All State two years in football, lettering in four sports: baseball, basketball, track and Football, and being elected for two years to the NYS Allstate All-star running back in football.

Mr. Utick was inducted into the Fulton Athlete Boosters’ Hall of Fame in 2005.

He attended St. Bonaventure College on a football scholarship.

Jim was a United States veteran having served in the Army as a sergeant during the Korean War.

He was past employed with Sealright for 16 years and retired from the United States Postal Service after 25 years of service.

Mr. Utick was a life member of the Fulton Polish Home and the Fulton VFW Post #569.

He lived a life fulfilled with a deep faith in God.

Jim was predeceased by his siblings, Frank and Helen.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis Brown Utick; children:  Sharon Utick of Phoenix, NY, Janice (Stephen) Belair of Oswego, NY, James and Susan Utick of Lancaster, NY; grandchildren: Leonard and Michael Ouderkirk of Fulton, Chelsea (Travis) Utick Horlacher of Nevada and Taylor Henderson of Lancaster, NY.

Jim is also survived by his two favorite cats: Yackadoo and Charcoal.

Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Church, Fulton, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Burial will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fulton.

Calling hours will be conducted 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Sugar Funeral Home, Inc., 224 W. Second St. S., Fulton.

The family would like to thank the St. Joseph’s ER staff, doctors and nurses especially the Palliative Care Unit for the compassionate care Jim and his family received during this difficult time.

  1. Jim Utick was the greatest Red Raider from old Fulton High School.
    He beat Oswego in 1948 which was difficult in those days,
    God Bless Jim for a life well done.
