OSWEGO – Marian Rose King, 97, of Oswego, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2026, with her loving family by her side after a short illness. She was born to the late Frank and Phillipa (Talamo) Scozzari on September 2, 1928, in Oswego Town. Marian met the love of her life, the late Carroll King, while working at Marathon (later Hammermill Paper Company). Even though it took 6 months for her to agree to go on a date with him, they were married on February 23, 1957, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Minetto. They resided in Oswego most of their lives, except when they were snowbirds and spent winters in sunny Florida near friends for several years.
After working at Hammermill, Marian got her real estate license and was a successful real estate agent with Galloway and Chetney Realty companies, along with running rental properties with Carroll. In their golden years, they vacationed in Hawaii and Puerto Rico with “the Chiefs,” the late Tom and Anne Mosher. She also was a card shark up until her passing, still easily beating her family in Skipo, Phase 10, Uno and Shanghai. Her lucky streak followed her whenever she visited a casino, playing her favorite game, the “one-armed bandits” aka slot machines, winning several times over the years. Marian was a proud mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dog mom. Her infamous spaghetti sauce, along with her ‘ronis and meatballs, were made with love each week to feed her growing family at every Sunday dinner at Grandma and Grandpa King’s house. She was predeceased by her husband, Carroll; her sister, Mary Scozzari; and her brothers, Jack, Phillip, Anthony, and Joseph Scozzari.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Richard and Mary King, of Oswego, Rosemary and David Place of Minetto, Deborah and Daniel Leonard, of Syracuse; her sisters, Josephine Kells, of Hannibal, and Rose Cullen, of Paducah, Kentucky; her grandchildren and their significant others, Richard King Jr. and Mandy Kirsch, Nicholas and Nicole King, Erin Place, Brittany Terotta and Jonathan Bartholomew, Allison Leonard and Jake Shulroff, and Sean Leonard; her great-grandchildren, Nina, Benjamin, and Ella King; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 4-6 p.m., Monday, January 12, at Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home, 147 W. 4th. St., Oswego. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 13, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 2912 State Route 48, Minetto. She will be entombed in All Saints Mausoleum in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Oswego.
