OSWEGO, NY – George R. McGrath, Sr. 82 of Oswego passed away peacefully Friday morning April 30, 2010, at St. Luke Health Services, Inc.

He was born on June 3, 1927, in Fulton, NY, and was the son of the late William and Anna (McMahon) McGrath.

He was educated in Oswego.

After marrying Mary Turner on February 19, 1949, in St. Mary’s Church, he resided in Oswego where he was employed as a car salesman at Ebert Buick and operated his own business, Auto Mart in Oswego selling cars, lawnmowers and snow blowers.

George could be seen most days puttering around Auto Mart.

His favorite pastime was planting flowers in the various parks in Oswego.

George belonged to the American Legion, VFW, and the Oswego Elks Lodge, where he could be seen at various functions.

He was a proud veteran, serving in the US Navy during World War II.

He loved to dance and he and his lovely wife, Mary, would dance up a storm at most of the dances.

He was a loving father to seven children, and a grandfather to 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He also cherished all of his pets, especially his dog, Beethoven.

George is survived by his lovely wife of 61 years, Mary;  and his children, Colleen (John) Rinaldo of Oswego, George McGrath Jr. of Colorado, Edward (Michelle) McGrath, Timothy (Margaret) McGrath, and Susan (Pat) Cahill all of Oswego.

Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Michele Talamo, John (Nicole) Rinaldo, Michael (Kristy) Rinaldo, William Rinaldo, Krystal McGrath Lawson, Ashley McGrath, George Robert McGrath III, Joli McGrath, Nichole McGrath, Joey McGrath, Karly Buske and Matt Buske; and four great-grandchildren, Riley Rinaldo, Anthony Talamo, Dylan Buske and Michael Rinaldo.

He was predeceased by two children, William McGrath in 1971 and Kathryn McGrath Lawson in 2008.

He is the brother of AnnaMae Mitchell of Oswego, Hazel Ebert of California, Eileen (George) Ranous, Helen Benzing both of Oswego and the late Jack (Catherine) McGrath.

Funeral services will be 8:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home and at 9 a.m. from St. Mary’s Church.

Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

    I’m sorry to hear of your loss. You bring back many fond memories of Minetto and kids and playing and growing up (a little) and, of course, E. 6th Street too. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
