HUSTON, TX – Joseph P. Amedio, 69, a resident of Houston Texas, passed away unexpectedly on Friday January 24, 2025. Born in Oswego NY on February 4, 1955, to Joseph and Eileen (Peglow) Amedio. Joey was the eldest of six children, attended St. Paul’s Academy and Oswego Catholic High School Graduating in the class of 1973. He briefly attended Auburn Community College before beginning work at Hammermill in Oswego. Joey became disenchanted with the Factory life and went back to School, full time, receiving a Batchelor’s Degree in Education from SUNY Oswego in 1984.
Joey spent time as a substitute Teacher in the Hannibal School District while simultaneously volunteering as an Assistant JV Basketball Coach at his Alma Mater, then known as Bishop Cunningham High School. Then, on one beautiful afternoon in the Fall of 1987, Joey hitched a ride to Texas with his brother Dave and found a home. It was there that his lifelong ambitions and purpose would be found. He was quickly hired at Vita Living, a State sponsored group of homes provided to adults with Disabilities. He started out buying their Groceries and running miscellaneous errands but within a few weeks found himself the head of their Human Resources Dept. Joey opened his heart to the residents of those homes and they, in turn, endeared him for his kindness and compassion. He would spend the better part of three decades with Vita Living before transitioning to the Texas State Dept. of Social Services where he continued his mission helping and serving those in need, finally retiring last year.
Along his journey, he met the Love of his life, Jennifer, in Texas, and later Married in 1999. Joey was not shy in letting everyone know just how lucky he was to have her in his life and the joy she brought to him.
Joey had an insatiable passion for Music, compiling a staggering collection of over 10,000 pieces of work in every Genre from the Classics of the 60’s & 70’s to the cutting edge of the Underground Music scene. His passion didn’t end with Music as he was a lifelong Sports enthusiast enjoying Basketball, Hockey, Baseball & Golf.
Joey was the pioneer in organizing the Amedio’s Truckers City of Oswego Basketball Team after High School where countless friends and family donned the Green and White Jersey over the years, and he was a loyal friend maintaining a close relationship with many of those players through long distance and Social Media. When calling home regularly, he would always inquire about his friends in Oswego, their children and all his Nieces and Nephews. He would never waste an opportunity to boast about his Grand Children and Great Grand Children. He was so grateful to be able to spend so much time with them. Joey had so much Love in his heart, he couldn’t bare not to share it. He had a quirky, if not adoring sense of humor and his steel trap memory could leave you laughing for hours and wanting more. He will be profoundly missed by all that had the pleasure to know him.
Joey is survived by his wife Jennifer and Stepson Sergio (Talia) Salinas, Grand Children Jessica Solorzano, Alyza & Jacella Soto, Julian & Eli Salinas and Great Grand Children Azier, Alexander & Nehemiah. He is also survived by his mother Eileen Amedio and siblings Michael (Kathy) Amedio of Oswego NY, Julie (Irwin) Flack of Philadelphia PA, David (Dorothea) Amedio of Algonquin IL, Thomas (Nanette) Amedio of Oswego NY and Steven (Lacy) Amedio of Charlotte NC.
