The gates of Heaven opened for Lula Mae Pettit through which she passed on Sunday, October 26, 2008. Lula was born, the youngest of five children, to James and Ida Holsapple on June 20, 1922. She married Alvah Vernon Pettit on August 12, 1939 and together they raised two daughters. Always a loving wife and mother, Lula worked outside of the home as well, with 16 years dedicated to Birds Eye Division of General Foods in Fulton.

Lula was predeceased by her husband, Alvah, who died in 1979. Surviving are her daughters, Pauline Foster and her husband Kenneth of Sauquoit and Carolyn Kovac and her husband John of Charlotte, VT; four grandchildren, Alvah Downs and his wife Alison, Harvey Downs and wife Renee, Crystal Downs, Jobie Downs and wife Heidi as well as 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Springbrook Cemetery, State Route 104A, Sterling. There are no calling hours. Contributions may be made in Lula’s memory to God’s Vision Christian Church (formerly Hannibal Community Church where she was a loyal member for many years) 326 Church Street, P.O. Box 69, Hannibal, NY 13074 or to Hannibal Volunteer Fire Corporation, P.O. Box 252, Hannibal, NY 13074.
