Yvonne “Bonnie” Granger, 70

It is with great sorrow and a broken heart that we write the obituary of Yvonne “Bonnie” Granger of Oswego.

The jewel of our family left us at the afternoon of July 24, 2008 when she passed peacefully at University Hospital in Syracuse, with her family by her side.

Bonnie was born on November 1, 1937, in Syracuse, NY, to the late Myrtle (Lancette) Miller and Louis Setrella.  On November 5, 1955, she married William “Bill” Granger at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rutherford, NJ.  The couple had three children; and resided in Rutherford & Wayne, NJ before moving to Scriba and settling in Oswego town in 1974.  They had been married for 32 years until Bill lost his battle with cancer on June 28, 1988, at the age of 52.

In the spring of 2000 Bonnie lost her voice box to larynx cancer.  She taught herself to communicate and managed to get along quite well without it.  Her favorite thing to do was spend time with family and friends.  Forever young at heart, she loved to be in the midst of things and will always be remembered for her inquisitive nature and caring spirit.  Bonnie was an Associate Member of the Ancient Order of Hibernian’s in Oswego, and in November, 2001, was awarded “Associate Hibernian of the Year”.

To Bonnie, family was first and foremost.  Left to cherish her memory are her brother Thomas Kitts of East Stroudsburg, PA; her three children: a son, Michael Granger (& Ann Fitzgerald); and two daughters; Kim (& G. Michael) Meggison and Michele (Scott) DuBois, all of Oswego.  She also leaves to mourn 12  grandchildren; Colleen (& Jerry) Emond, Stephanie Fitzgerald, Chris (& Melissa) Fitzgerald, Janell Granger (& Shawn Parks), G. William Meggison, Amber (& Christian) Sweeting, Christopher Granger and Daniel Fitzgerald, and 9 great grandchildren.

We would like to thank all of her family and friends for their love and support during this difficult time, especially Kelly Sawyer and Trish Waters for whom without their support we would be lost.  We feel our loss is Heaven’s gain and although we are saddened without her, it is comforting to know she is in God’s loving care. She will be missed very deeply.

Burial will be at the catholic cemetery of St. Peter & St. Paul on East River Road in Oswego, where she will be laid to rest next to her loving husband Bill. At her request, a private family service will be held. Friends and loved ones will be invited to stop by and share memories with her family at the Ancient Order of Hibernian’s in Oswego in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family.

We will never get over the loss of our mother, but we thank God for sharing her with us.

  2. I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Bonnie was my 1/2 sister who I only met several times when I was young. I am going through my parent’s things (Louis) and decided to google the Setrella last name in which I came upon this. I no longer live in NY, but was actually in Syracuse on this day. I wish I had known, I could have gone to see her. She called me several times in the early 80’s and it would have been nice to see my sister this 1 last time.
I will keep your family in my prayers and thoughts through this difficult time.

  3. My wife and I are saddened to hear about your mom’s passing. Our prayers
go out to you and your family. Patti and I always looked forward to seeing her at the Hibernian club.
