On June 1, the Oswego Middle School String Orchestra and Chorus traveled to perform and compete at the Darien Lake Music Festival competition at Six Flags Darien Lake.
This is the third consecutive year that the OMS Orchestra has returned home to Oswego with the Grand Champions Trophy Meanwhile, the Oswego Middle School Chorus captured second place with a score of 96.5,
The OMS string orchestra performed three pieces for an enthusiastic audience which included two judges. The orchestra consisted of 54 string students and was also joined by three percussionists: Jordan Crapser, Kyle Osmun, and Lydia Tryon.
The Orchestra was awarded a ‘Superior with Distinction’ trophy as well as the Grand Champions trophy in their division for their combined score of 96.5 performing Green Day’s” 21st Century Breakdown,” “Serengeti Dreams,” and “Medieval Wars.”
This is the third year in a row that the OMS Orchestra has been awarded the Grand Champions Trophy, and in the last 13 years that the orchestra has been attending this competition, this is their 10th Grand Champion win. Some of the judges’ comments included: the orchestra performed very musically, with great use of dynamics and with a mature and professional stage presence.
They were particularly impressed with the large size of the orchestra and yet the students’ ability to pay attention to the smallest details.
Members of the award winning orchestra included Jenna Ballard, Katherine Breezee, Victoria Armet, Joey Burnett, Ayla Busch, Nick Chalifoux, Natalie Chubon, Ben Defoe, Robin Huang, Lisa Kanbur, Desiree Myers, Emily Oldenburg, Elaina Rando, Corey Stevens, Mikayla Trapasso, Sophia Woods, Abby Thompson, Kayla Becksted, Johnny DeLapp, Alexis Elmer, Brooke Farnsworth, Hailey Giocondo, Ben Hansel, Halley Jermyn, Abbey Mulkerin, Brad Patterson, Taylor Peterson, Libby Rookey, Jordan Runner, Kiana Senke, Jordan Tryon and Sabrina Winslow.
Also included in the orchestra were Claire Richardson, Nathaniel Ahart, Sarah Fitzgibbons, Mark Forger, Emily Strzelinski, Nicholas Sullivan, Katelyn Wise, Tyler Blackmar, Tim Boyzuck, Austin Crapser, Dakota Ellis, Caitlyn Johndrew, Luke May, Justin Pospesel, Beatta Trovato, Sophia Horn, Brandon Cheeley, Avery Croucher, Ashton Flint, Sammy Mays, Kyle Roy, Matthew See, Jordan Crapser, Lydia Tryon and Kyle Osmun.
The OMS chorus also received a score of 96.5 earning them second place out of 10 middle school choirs. This is the fifth year in a row that the chorus has performed at the “Gold with Distinction” level.
The 130 student chorus performed a variety of challenging pieces including a Latin piece from the Baroque and the 4-part gospel-style piece “He Never Failed Me Yet”. The judges complemented the group on their tone, blend, focus and professionalism.
They were impressed with the group’s ability to perform such a difficult and varied repertoire.
For the first time at competition the chorus also featured two soloists, Chris Van Gorder and Claudia Engle.

After the performance, the students enjoyed a fun-filled day in the park culminating with the awards assembly where they were presented with their certificates of a Superior – with – distinction rating and their trophies.
Directors Paul Brewster, Paula McKenney-Myers, and Miss Debbie Mazurek, said they were “very proud of their students not only for their performances, but for representing Oswego with their excellent behavior, supportive character and teamwork. The trophies are just the icing on the cake. The goal is excellence on every level, and the Oswego Middle School Chorus and String Orchestra achieved that.”
