DRI – Downtown Revitalization Initiative

To The Editor:
We have all heard about this I’m sure. We have all heard or read how our neighbor, the city of Oswego, has received money, lots of it, to accomplish its plan.

Here in our city of Fulton, we have a group assembled to try and accomplish the same thing.

They have tried once before and now they are trying again. I applaud them for their effort.

The big problem I have is that there seems to be group that was organized to help benefit our city.

It is called the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

Yes, they appear to be doing what they were formed to do with one and maybe two big problems.

The first one was the moving of the farmers’ market out of downtown and across the river next to the lake.

Which, in 10 or 15 years, will be a great spot for a second farmers’ market – but not now. We are trying to bring people into our downtown, not take them out of our downtown area.

We should have moved it to South First Street and blocked off South First Street from Cayuga to Rochester and put the venders in the street like they do in most cities.

Then we would have three parking areas for the customers and our seniors at the Towers wouldn’t have to take a bus to an event that many of them enjoyed.

This would all happen on Saturday then on Sunday do the same thing only with crafts and flea market vendors.

Bring life into our downtown, area don’t take it away.

Now I heard a rumor today that the same organization is planning on moving Tunes in June over across the river also.

Now this is just a RUMOR it is not FACT. You have to stop RUMORS before they become FACT.

So, we have one group that is trying to revitalize our downtown with plans and money and we have another that seems to be trying to do just the opposite.

It’s not too late to change things for next year.

  1. Well spoken frank. Time for a new mayor. We need someone like yourself to take over. What’s your thought on getting pool and play ground back .

  2. I fought for the study to repair the pool over 3yrs ago. Look back at the letters I have written and the ans. from Jim Myers in the paper. Some people think it’s new but ask any common councilor how I asked and blamed them for it not being opened …That is a City issue and I was fighting it as a private taxpayer. County can’t force the city to do anything. They have their own elected officials they have to vote to fund the running of the pool as well as applying for a grant and I told them in great length how to do it. I had heard that the private chambers discussions were such that 4 common councilors were against it and 2 were for doing the study so it never got to the floor. The three west-side councilors and one east-side councilor against it. Even this past year I wrote a comment about how all the money they had put into the lake they could have had a filtration system installed into the pond and been using it. It’s old news and the dam is being removed the last I heard. It is a City issue and they don’t want to fix the dam. They could I’m sure apply for a grant I’m sure. Maybe Dennis and Sammy can get it done.

  3. It seems that Fulton’s goal is to seek government grants and to not pursue economic development. Perhaps the two go hand in hand but spending grant money without any correlation to jobs and tax revenue, just perpetuates the addiction.
