Dear Editor,
I am writing to highlight the importance of construction and infrastructure development in Oswego County and the role it plays in strengthening our local economy and creating career opportunities.
Recently, local news reported that the Oswego County Industrial Development Agency received a $2.5 million federal grant to fund roads, water lines, and sewer infrastructure for the expansion of the L. Michael Treadwell Oswego County Industrial Park. This project will prepare new sites for businesses and support long-term economic growth in the region.
Projects like this show how essential construction is to the future of our community. Construction workers are not only building roads and utilities they are helping bring new companies, jobs, and services to Oswego. Without skilled tradespeople, projects that improve infrastructure, healthcare facilities, housing, and local businesses simply could not happen.
However, one challenge facing the construction industry is a shortage of young workers entering the trades. Many students are encouraged to pursue traditional four year degrees, but careers in construction offer strong wages, hands on work, and opportunities for advancement. Trade programs, apprenticeships, and internships can provide a direct pathway into stable employment while helping local contractors meet demand.
Supporting the construction workforce benefits everyone in Oswego. When infrastructure improves and businesses expand, the entire community gains through job creation, increased tax revenue, and better services. Encouraging young people to consider skilled trades is not only practical it is necessary for the continued growth of our region.
I encourage community leaders, educators, and local businesses to continue promoting trade education and partnerships with local contractors. Investing in the construction workforce today will help ensure that Oswego continues to grow and thrive in the years ahead.
Thank you for your time and for covering issues that affect our local community.
Sincerely,
Justin Termine
