Oswego State Women’s Basketball Falls To Rochester, 73-39

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s basketball team struggled offensively as it suffered a 73-39 loss to eighth-ranked University of Rochester on Tuesday night in Rochester. The Yellowjacket defense limited the Lakers to 32 percent shooting from the field and forced 30 turnovers, while 14 different Rochester players scored in the season opener for both teams.

With the score tied at three, the Yellowjackets tallied eight straight points capped off by an Ally Zywicki layup with 14:20 left in the first half prompting an Oswego State timeout. Meagan Stover (Jr., Lake George, N.Y.) responded out of the break with a jumper to end the string, but the Lakers were limited to two points over the next five minutes until Kayla Ryan (Sr., Schaghticoke, N.Y.) drove to the hoop for two of her seven first half points to make the score 17-9 in Rochester’s favor. However, the Yellowjacket defense helped the home team go into halftime with a 35-19 lead as the Lakers mustered ten points in the final nine minutes of the opening frame.

Rochester started the second half on a 28-6 run with Oswego State receiving a pair of treys from Stover and Kassie Kleine (Jr., Cazenovia, N.Y.), as the Yellowjackets took control with 53-25 advantage with 12 minutes to play. Devon Kaminsky (Fr., Walton, N.Y.) and Alyssa Georgiade (Jr., Clay, N.Y.) scored back-to-back layups for the Lakers, but the deficit would be too much for the Lakers to overcome.

Ryan and Stover were the top scorers for Oswego State with seven points apiece, while Rochester’s Danielle McNabb led all scorers with ten points. The Lakers were out-rebounded by a margin of 49-28, as the Yellowjackets came away with 17 offensive rebounds. Rochester also owned an edge from the charity stripe as it was 16-for-26 compared to Oswego State going 3-for-6.

Oswego State opens its home portion of the schedule on Friday when it hosts the Max Ziel Basketball Tournament.
