Oswego To Take Over Softball Leagues

OSWEGO, NY – Softball will once again be provided by the Port City.

The YMCA has turned Legends Softball Complex back over to the city because they found it wasn’t feasible and couldn’t make any money, Lee Walker said during Monday night’s Common Council’s public session.

“I find it ironic that now the city wants to take it back and they think they can do better with it,” he said. “This is a losing proposition. You’re taking on another burden. Why should the city of Oswego take it over?”

He suggested finding someone else, perhaps a non-profit group, to run the complex.

“I hope you’d consider it and not put it back on the city of Oswego,” he told the councilors.

Regarding the issue of the complex not making any money for whoever runs it, Oswego resident Miles Becker asked, “I’d like to know where we’re making any money. I don’t see where (the city) is making any money.”

Councilor Shawn Walker wondered if the city would break even if it took on the complex again.

“If we don’t break even, then we’re wasting our manpower out there,” he said.

“That’s what we hope to accomplish this year,” replied DPW Commissioner Mike Smith.

The softball program is important to a lot of people in the city, Councilor Fran Enwright pointed out.

He said it deserves to be looked at for at least a year to see if it is viable.

Commissioner Smith said he hopes to fill the off-hours for maintaining the complex with seasonal workers.

The city Department of Parks and Recreation will be operating the softball complex for the upcoming season.

Monday night, the council OK’d the department’s fee schedule for the season. All funds generated from operating the complex and from the city softball leagues shall be deposited in the Softball Accounting Reserve Fund.

The fees for the 2014 season are as follows:

Men’s Fast Pitch – team fee $215, sponsor’s fee $175, forfeit fee $75, player card fee $120 per team

Men’s Modified Fast Pitch – team fee $215, sponsor’s fee $175, forfeit fee $75, player card fee $120 per team

Men’s Slow Pitch – team fee $200, sponsor’s fee $175, forfeit fee $60, player card fee $120 per team

Women’s Slow Pitch – team fee $200, sponsor’s fee $175, forfeit fee $60, player card fee $120 per team

Add on player fees for all leagues will be $20 per player.

The council decided to give it a shot for a year and see how it goes.

The vote was 5-0-2 with councilors Mike Todd and Ron Kaplewicz excused.
