Oswego River report
According to Jake Metcalf of fishoswegoriver.com:
I decided to fish behind the hotels yesterday in search of brown trout. The water flow was 15,00cfs at the time. My tactic was simple – jig a white swim-bait off the bottom. I fished for an hour without any bites and finally got a hit around 3 pm when the air temperature got to a peak of about 44 degrees. Initially I guessed that I was hooked up with a brown because it was digging hard and staying down. I was wrong though and it turned out to be a hefty walleye. You better believe this fish was released to do her spawning duties and grow bigger.
Notice: The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. For more information, visit our website at www.visitoswegocounty.com and click on the Fishing Report along the top bar on the home page.
Salmon River report:
According to Whitaker’s Sport Shop & Motel:
The few anglers we spoke with reported having a very good day in both the upper and lower end of the river. Anglers we have staying in the motel who fished the Lower Fly Zone reported doing well with nymphs producing the best results. Yesterday I fished the lower end of the river and landed several chrome fish. I covered lots of water while float fishing with egg sacs. In the morning most of the fish I landed were holding in the holes but as the temperature warmed up and conditions were bright and sunny, I found them along the inside seams of the transition water.
According to the Douglaston Salmon Run:
Despite the weather we had one angler fish the Run on Wednesday and reported landing almost double digits of steelies/rainbows using egg sacs. All of the steelhead were dime bright. Yesterday was a beautiful day on the Run and the few anglers who fished reported they were very successful. “Everyone seemed to get them today.” The water flow from the reservoir remains at 500cfs and is currently 755 cfs at Pineville.
Oneida Lake report:
Anglers reported good ice conditions over the weekend. There was no snow so creepers were helpful making it out on the slick ice. Anglers reported yesterday there was a 2-6 inch cover of snow on the ice depending on where you were. Still very slick under the snow. Colder temperatures have again moved in for the next few days with a little more snow in the forecast. Anglers were finding some perch and walleyes although there were a number of shorts. Please use caution as anglers have found a few cracks that were covered by snow.
Sandy Pond report:
According to Woody’s Tackle:
Anglers are continuing to take advantage of good ice conditions on the pond. There has been no snow on the ice and anglers were finding creepers very useful over the weekend. The temperatures have dropped and the area did receive a couple of inches of snow midweek with some expected over the weekend. Anglers are finding perch, walleye and Northern pike.
Winter Trails Report:
Snowmobiling:
The Governor announced free snowmobile weekend February 2-5: Registration fee waived for out-of-state snowmobilers for this promotional weekend. Participants in free snowmobiling weekend must operate a snowmobile that has a valid registration in their home state or Canadian Province. They must carry applicable insurance required by their home state or province.
According to the Pulaski-Boylston Snowmobile Club:
The groomer was out on Boylston trails Tuesday night and Wednesday. C5A from Snyder Road all the way up to the top of Little John Dr. where we meet Redfield groomer has been done along with CCC Road and Bice Road. Last night’s grooming crew did S54 which loops off C5A on Tucker Road and reconnects back to C5A on Blount Mills Road. Also grromed down S51 from the Gathering Place Restaurant to Dam Road near the Salmon River Reservoir where they turned around due to low snow.
According to the Mexico Trail Riders:
All trails are now closed.
According to the Redfield Snowmobile Association:
Finally a weekend with temperatures below freezing. We did receive a few inches of very fluffy snow over the past couple days. There is a few more inches of snow forecasted for the weekend. We resumed grooming last night. The trails north of town have better coverage; trails south of town are still thin. Use caution as some areas are icy.
According to the Square Valley Trail Blazers:
All trails are closed except for Happy Valley. Due to the warm temperatures grooming of Happy Valley trails has ceased and trails are slowly deteriorating.
According to the Winona Forest Recreation Association:
The base is still good but we have lost a lot of snow. We still have a 1-2 foot base on the main corridor trails.
Cross Country Skiing:
According to the Winona Forest Recreation Association:
We sent a crew out to start prepping the tourathon course last night. It is going to be great with snow in the forecast over the next few days. We also groomed the main corridor trails – Wart, Hawley, Bargy and Hessel. They are flat and hard packed. We could not get to the northern section because there is not enough snow on the woodland trails. Gold Spike from Rte. 90 to Kate Hall is considered unsafe at this time and should not be traveled.
