The new physician said he was excited to join the Oswego Health system which offered him so many professional and personal opportunities. “From a practice standpoint, this gives me a chance to work long term alongside a well-respected physician,” he said. “Upstate New York is also a great place for my family to live and raise our daughter.”

Dr. Sapkota attended Manipal College of Medical Sciences in Nepal, where he was nominated by the Government of Nepal’s Ministry of Education to receive a full scholarship while he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). During medical school, he was recognized for being the best in basic and clinical sciences, as well as for being the most outgoing medical student.

Following medical school, Dr. Sapkota came to the United States to complete his training, where he continued to be recognized for his skills and enthusiasm for the field of medicine.

He was chief resident for internal medicine at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, where he was presented the Deepa Chander Award as the outstanding postgraduate resident in internal medicine. Following this training, he served a fellowship in gastroenterology at New York Methodist Hospital, also in Brooklyn.

Dr. Sapkota said that by having training both as an internist and gastroenterologist, he was able to combine a medical and surgical practice. “I like the art of practicing medicine, and also being able to meet the gastroenterology needs of my patients,” he said.

Dr. Sapkota is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Sapkota’s wife, Sushma Sapkota-Pandey, MD, is an Internist, who will also be practicing in the Oswego area later this year. The couple has a young daughter.

In his spare time, Dr. Sapkota enjoys biking, swimming and hiking.
