A Healthy New Year’s Resolution

The Oswego County Health Department suggests that people make their New Year’s resolution for 2010 a healthy one — make a plan to get everyone in the family up-to-date on their vaccinations.

Dr. Dennis Norfleet, Director of Public Health, emphasizes the importance of receiving routine, up-to-date immunizations across the life span, from infants to the elderly.

“Getting immunized is a lifelong, life-protecting community effort,” said Dr. Norfleet. “Being aware of the vaccines that are recommended for infants, children, adolescents, and adults of all ages, and making sure that we receive these immunizations, are critical to protecting ourselves and our communities from disease.”

Recommended vaccinations begin soon after birth and continue throughout life. Because children are particularly vulnerable to infection, most vaccines are given during the first five to six years of life.

“By staying up-to-date on the recommended vaccines, individuals can protect themselves, their families, their friends and their communities from serious, life-threatening infections,” added Dr. Norfleet.

If children, adolescents, or adults have missed any shots, consult with your healthcare provider or the Oswego County Health Department about getting up-to-date. The Oswego County Health Department offers immunization clinics every Friday at 70 Bunner St. in Oswego from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., and at the Pulaski Courthouse on the first and third Fridays of the month from 9 to 11 a.m..
