Oswego Health Partners with Central New York Regional Center for Tobacco Health Systems to Enhance Tobacco Dependence Treatment

OSWEGO – Oswego Health is excited to announce the implementation of an essential enhancement to its tobacco-dependence treatment policy, which is now in alignment with Public Health Service Guidelines. In collaboration with the Central New York Regional Center for Tobacco Health Systems at St. Joseph’s Health, Oswego Health has committed to offering evidence-based tobacco dependence screening and treatment to all patients and clients it serves.

This partnership is part of Oswego Health’s ongoing dedication to improving patient care and community health. The Central New York Regional Center for Tobacco Health Systems team works with medical and behavioral health organizations throughout the region to establish best practice policies that address tobacco dependence. They provide comprehensive training to clinicians and healthcare staff on the latest strategies for treating tobacco use, including addiction management, emerging products such as e-cigarettes, cessation medications, and the 5As framework for patient interaction.

As part of the effort to enhance tobacco cessation support, Oswego Health is proud to highlight its Respiratory Therapy Program, which assists both inpatient and outpatient individuals on their journey to quitting tobacco. The Respiratory Therapy Program provides personalized care through expert assessment, education, and treatment, offering ongoing support for individuals affected by tobacco use. Additionally, the Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) Lab at Oswego Health plays an essential role by evaluating lung health, identifying potential smoking-related complications, and providing critical information that guides treatment decisions. Together, these services empower patients to make informed decisions and take proactive steps toward improving their respiratory health.

“We are thrilled to take this critical step forward in supporting our patients with the resources and tools they need to quit tobacco for good,” said Stephanie Alnutt, MHA, BS, RRT, Director of Respiratory Therapy at Oswego Health. “Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death, and through this enhanced policy, we are not only aligning with best practices but also making a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of our community. Quitting tobacco is one of the most powerful changes a person can make for their health, and we’re here to support them every step of the way.”

The Central New York Regional Center for Tobacco Health Systems’ support and technical assistance has been invaluable in helping Oswego Health achieve this goal. With their guidance, the healthcare team has fully integrated best practice guidelines into daily care practices, ensuring that patients are regularly screened for tobacco use and provided with tailored support for cessation.

The importance of this initiative cannot be overstated. Tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the U.S. In New York State alone, more than 28,000 individuals die each year from tobacco-related diseases, and over 750,000 adults live with smoking-related illnesses. Evidence shows that most smokers and users of e-cigarettes want to quit, and with the proper support, their chances of success increase significantly.

“We know quitting is tough, but it’s never too late to start,” said Alnutt. “Whether you’re a lifelong smoker or someone who has recently started using tobacco, seeking help can make all the difference in achieving long-term success. Our commitment to tobacco cessation is part of our larger mission to improve the overall health of our community and empower individuals to take charge of their wellness.”

Oswego Health’s Respiratory Therapy Program and the Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) Lab provide essential services in diagnosing and treating smoking-related health issues, making them key components in the organization’s effort to combat tobacco use. Combining evidence-based treatment, expert care, and support ensures that patients receive comprehensive and compassionate help as they work toward a tobacco-free future.

Oswego Health’s partnership with the Central New York Regional Center for Tobacco Health Systems represents a significant step in the fight against tobacco-related health issues. By combining the expertise of medical professionals with evidence-based approaches to treatment, Oswego Health is providing its patients with the tools they need to break free from tobacco dependence and improve their quality of life.
