Oswego Health Unveils New Da Vinci Xi Robot

By Jose Hernandez

OSWEGO – Oswego Health held a showcase last Friday to display their new da Vinci Xi surgical system. Dr. Ryan Walker guided Oswego residents and Oswego Health employees in operating the new robot. The da Vinci Xi system was released publicly in 2014, and it is the first robot at the community hospital.

The da Vinci Xi system is used in minimally invasive surgery. The da Vinci system provides the precision and visibility needed for more complex surgeries. Via the remotely operated surgical tools, the robot allows for shorter post-surgery hospital stays, lower probability of complications, and less need for opioid painkillers. “Our outcomes and patient satisfaction is actually a little better than laparoscopic surgery, we thought that they would be on par, but we’re proving that the robot is better.”

“We’re excited to have it and get everyone up to speed, and get our surgeries done,” said Walker. The machine is commonly used Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and occasional on Friday’s if needed. Currently, there are only three surgeons who use the machine. Come October, that number will rise to 6. “In about two weeks, we’ll have six surgeons and only five days to use it; that is a good problem to have,” said Walker.

The da Vinci Xi system makes for more precise surgery but also allows for surgeons to be more comfortable during long surgeries. “The control that we have is phenomenal, the ergonomics are great, we’re sitting down, we’re not twerking ourselves into all these strange positions doing laparoscopic surgery, which tends to be very uncomfortable.

Oswego Health plans to name the da Vinci Xi system with the help of the children of Oswego. The robot is currently nameless, so be on the lookout for a future article revealing the name on Oswego County Today.
