Bills To Improve Child Care, Public Safety, Affordability & Combat Antisemitism Blocked By Assembly Democrats

During this week’s committee activity in the Assembly, Democrats blocked dozens of Republican-backed proposals aimed at addressing critical issues facing New Yorkers. Some of the proposed legislation included measures to make homeownership more attainable for those with student debt, strengthen penalties for violating orders of protection, expand recreational opportunities for veterans and reduce wasteful state spending. Despite their potential to address real challenges, each of these initiatives was rejected by the Democratic majority.

“New Yorkers are paying the price for unchecked one-party control in Albany,” said Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay (R,C-Pulaski). “Our Conference works tirelessly to advance measures that address the needs of everyday New Yorkers—initiatives aimed at improving public safety, lowering costs, and enhancing quality of life. Yet time and time again, Assembly Democrats stand in the way of practical solutions while residents struggle. These are bills that help everyone, not one political party. The people deserve better than partisan gridlock—they deserve action out of their state legislators.”

A recent Siena Poll revealed that 46% of New Yorkers believe the state is headed in the wrong direction, and a Marist Poll conducted in April reported that 55% of New Yorkers think the quality of life has gotten worse—a clear sign that change in Albany is urgently needed.
