Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay

     “It’s generous of Gov. Hochul and New York Democrats to offer political refuge to run-and-hide legislators from Texas. As the Assembly Republican Leader, I understand the frustration of governing in the minority party. But here’s my advice for today’s guests at the Capitol: Go home and do the job you were elected to do. If I left town every time I thought the other side of the aisle introduced bad legislation, I’d never be in Albany.

Regardless of today’s theatrics, no one should be foolish enough to believe Democrats in New York need a Texas special session as a reason to rig elections in their favor. I’ve got bad news for any representatives from the Lone Star State who abandoned their posts thinking they might land in the cradle of election integrity—Albany isn’t it. For years, Kathy Hochul and New York Democrats have treated the state’s election laws as if they are written on a dry-erase board.

Just consider their highlights:

  • Drew redistricting maps in 2022 that were so blatantly biased, a panel of Democrat-appointed judges threw them out;
  • Ignored a public referendum opposing the use of expanded absentee ballots and passed legislation to expand them anyway;
  • Passed a law ensuring ALL court challenges to election results are heard ONLY in districts dominated by Democratic judges;
  • Passed legislation to redraw the state’s judicial maps, creating three new Democratic districts, without input from the courts, the judiciary or the public.
     Nowhere in America do the actual principles of democracy mean less than with New York Democrats. We’ve lost a million residents to states like Texas because, in part, political self-interest too often takes priority over the public’s best interest. I hope despite today’s political sideshow, New York’s election integrity and constitutional standards remain intact, and lawmakers get back to helping the people who put them in office.”
