Dear Porky and Buddy,
I was in a pet store the other day, I don’t want to give out their name because I don’t want to get them in trouble, but they had the most gorgeous Golden Retriever puppies for sale, about 7 weeks old. I know that a lot of puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills and I would not support that, so I asked and the owner assured me that all of her puppies come from local breeders and if I bought one, she would give me the paperwork. What do you think?
We think she is either lying or she is buying puppies from a New York State commercial dog breeding facility (there are 33 of them, mostly in Western New York and the Finger Lakes region, so “local,” we suppose).
She is not buying from a responsible breeder because no responsible breeder would allow his or her puppies to be sold willy nilly in a pet store to just anybody, nor would they take them from their mother at seven weeks.
Furthermore, she is required by law to show you the information concerning the source of these puppies before you buy one.
And New York law forbids the sale of puppies less than eight weeks of age.
In 2011, the Humane Society of the United States conducted an investigation of 100 pet stores in the New York City area.
They used on-site hidden camera visits to some of the stores, document reviews of all of them, and visits to puppy suppliers.
The HSUS found many deceptive practices concerning the origin of the puppies these stores were selling.
All of them were selling puppy mill puppies, many from some of the most horrific puppy mill operators in the country.
All of them, on their websites, in ads, and in their stores claimed that they obtained their puppies from “small local breeders,” not from puppy mills.
They all lied.
We think you should run, not walk away from this store and you should report what happened during your visit to both the New York Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Agriculture and Markets.
You can find the links to do that on each of their websites.
Then when you are done with your civic responsibility, go to Petfinder.com and type in Golden Retriever in the breed search box.
You’ll be amazed, you’ll probably save money, and you will definitely save a life.
