Quick Start Propels Oswego State Field Hockey Past Ithaca 3-1

Three goals in the first 15 minutes lifted the Oswego State field hockey over Ithaca 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in the final home game of the regular season. The win moved the Lakers to 7-8 overall, while the Bombers fell to 4-11.

Senior Eileen O’Neil (New City, N.Y.) tallied her first goal of the season 2:15 into the contest Jordan McGuire (So., Macedon, N.Y.) and Brittany Roetzer (Jr., Akron, N.Y.) found her stick with the pass as she beat Ithaca goalie Chelsea Welch.

Ten minutes later, head coach Brandi Ostrander’s squad built a 3-0 lead after goals from Roetzer and Alyssa Hare (Fr., Middleport, N.Y.). Despite the offensive burst, the Laker defense did its job to preserve the lead as the Bombers outshot Oswego State 16-8. Goalie Jamie Scharfe (Webster, N.Y.) stopped eight shots, while the defense in front of her made four additional saves.

Ithaca finally broke through for a goal in the 53rd minute when Mia Muzio recorded an unassisted goal. The score motivated Oswego State defense for the duration of the game as the Bombers mustered just two shots on goal for the rest of the contest.

The Lakers will close out the regular season next Wednesday at Houghton College at 4:30 p.m.
